You have been approved for a Canadian VISA; the next step is buying your ticket and packing your bags. But what about your pet? Are you going to leave it behind? NO! The traditional idea of a family has evolved; it no longer only consists of humans but also by pets that are very important members of today's families. For this reason, we want to provide you with information and tips so you can buy a ticket for your pet and share the great experience of traveling to other countries.
What are the required legal documents?
Original vaccination certificate translated
Health certificate issued by an authorized veterinarian
Export permit certificate
Your pet must have all the vaccines up to date, but the mandatory vaccines for traveling are the rabies vaccine; make sure he/she has it.
This certificate must specify if your pet is sterilized or not. The veterinary clinic must carry out the procedure and have all the pertinent legal certifications.
The entity where it is issued varies depending on the country (for example, if you are in Colombia, the ICA), but it is essential to have it; otherwise, you cannot travel with your pet.
If your ticket has a stopover, they must issue an additional certificate for each one mentioned above since you must leave an original certificate for each country of stopover and arrival.
Tips that can be very useful
- Before buying your ticket, speak to the airline to verify if there is room for your pet on the plane since they have a limit and there may not be room for your pet on the same plane.
- If your pet weighs less than 8 Kilos and is less than 20 CM tall, it can travel with you in the cabin, but if it exceeds this weight, it must travel in the hold, and you must buy a crate to transport it.
- Legalize your pet when you arrive at each destination.
- Check well the province or city where you will arrive since not all dog breeds are allowed in many places, and there are also age restrictions.
- You must not give your pet anything that may sedate him/her as it may be harmful, and they will check your pet's health.
- Make sure to feed and relieve your pet at least two hours before the flight.
