How do I know if I have a good profile to apply for a permanent residence in Canada?

Permanent Residence in Canada is a status that a foreign citizen can obtain to live, study or work in Canada permanently without any limitations. After 3 years as a permanent resident the applicant can apply for citizenship. Permanent residence and citizenship are the ultimate goals for most foreigners who want to live in Canada. However, to get to this point you must meet the requirements of one of the immigration programs offered by Canada. The immigration system is quite complex, there are about 100 immigration programs, and they are constantly changing. Each have different application and eligibility requirements.

The first step that each applicant must take is to review available programs to understand how the immigration system works in Canada. This research helps us decide which of the migratory classes: Economic, Family Sponsorship, or Refugees and Asylum, is an option for us and our family. After this stage, the requirements must be reviewed to see if we are eligible. Qualifying for a permanent residence program does not mean that we will receive it. All decisions are made at the discretion of the immigration officer, so it is important to know if we have a good profile to achieve our goal.

To do so we must understand how the immigration officer thinks when making a decision. To obtain permanent residency under the Family Sponsorship and Refugee and Asylum classes, the applicant must prove and convince the officer that they meet the requirements and deserve to be granted permanent residency. If you don’t have family in Canada and you don’t need refugee protection, then maybe you could be a good candidate for one of the program under the Economic class. In Economic class the focus is more on the candidate’s work experience, education, and skills.

The Canadian government says that immigrants are essential for the growth of the economy. An ideal candidate is someone who can help boost the economy by bringing unique skills and has the ability to easily establish himself in the country. Some examples include: education and/or profession that is in demand, experience or studies in Canada, knowledge of the official languages of Canada, relatives in the country, etc. To know if we have a good profile, we must evaluate our situation and be able to demonstrate what we can offer to Canada.

When making an application for permanent residence, we must remember that meeting the minimum requirements is not a guarantee of getting an approval. In order to increase the chances of receiving a positive decision, we need to provide the proper documentation to let the officer know that we are going to be a great asset to the country. Otherwise, we should think about what we can do to improve our profile. Perhaps improving the language(s) or learning a new skill is something we lack to fulfill the dream of immigrating to Canada.
