The British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program or BC-PNP is a collaborative initiative of the Federal Government of Canada and the BC Provincial Government to facilitate the transition to permanent residence as part of the province’s economic immigration plan.
The BC-PNP, like many other PNP programs across Canada, is a two-step application:
First stage with the provincial government in one of the various categories of the program, and if approved and nominated.
Second stage with the Federal Government to grant the final Permanent Resident (PR) status.
An important aspect of the BC-PNP, like any other PNP, is that this is an application that is being carried out by two participants:
- The main applicant seeking to obtain the PR through this application.
- The employer supporting the application by providing a job offer and also being eligible as per program requirements.
Skilled Worker Category
To qualify for this stream, you must:
- have accepted a full-time, indeterminate job offer (the job offer must not be temporary or have a defined end date) from a B.C. employer. The job must be in a skilled occupation (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3)
- be qualified to perform the duties of the job
- have a minimum of two years of full-time (or full-time equivalent) work experience in any skilled occupation (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3)
As explained, a full-time, permanent job offer from a BC employer, in a qualified position is needed. This is the most important part of the application, without a full-time and indeterminate job offer, the process cannot move forward.
However, it is also important to note that the candidate must have at least 24 months of work experience in any skilled job in the last 10 years.
Similarly, depending on the TEER level of the occupation applied for, language tests may be required. However, if applicants wish to claim points for language proficiency, they must necessarily submit a language test.
Based on these requirements, the score can be calculated, and determine if the applicant is within the range in which the scores move in the invitation rounds that the government does every two weeks.
BC-PNP Point Calculation System
The calculation of BC-PNP points is made based on the following factors that award points to a candidate:
- Occupation-related work experience in BC
- Highest educational level attained (includes education obtained in BC or Canada)
- Wage in occupation in BC (expressed in $Canadian per hour)
- Language level (either the first or second language of the two official languages of Canada, English or French)
- The region where the job is located within the province
The combination of the score obtained in these 5 factors are those that determine the final score that a candidate has and with which they can create their profile on the BC-PNP online portal and enter the pool of candidates for the draw rounds.
If the score obtained is at the draw level or higher, then the applicant will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) and with that the process can begin. The program grants 30 calendar days for the person to complete the online application and attach the supporting documents, which will be from both the applicant and the employer. Once complete, the application can be submitted and the $1,150 CAD processing fee must be paid at the time of submission.
BC-PNP Skilled Workers - Tech Modality
This modality does not represent a category in itself, rather it is a way of giving preference and special processing to those progressions that fall within certain occupation codes that are related to activities in the field of technology.
Although the application and selection system is very similar to any other Skilled Worker candidate (since it is within this category), the scores needed to be invited for an occupation code (TEER) in the Tech modality, are usually much lower than in the regular Skilled Worker rounds. This makes it possible for many to receive an invite to apply, even if their score isn’t as high as it would be if they were attempting an invite as Skilled Worker only.
The great advantage of this modality is that those who are selected and invited receive preferential processing, with which the responses to the approval of the nomination arrive in approximately 2-3 weeks, compared to 2-3 months in the usual way. regular. Thus, the total residence process is significantly shortened, especially if this modality is combined with Express Entry at the Federal level.
