What is the difference between a college and university?

Knowing the educational system in Canada is essential if you want to study in this country.

Colleges:

The college system in Canada was developed to provide technical training. Colleges typically focus on job-specific skills, career training, and trades. They also tend to have smaller class sizes, with a lower student-to-instructor ratio, something that can be beneficial for students who learn better with individualized attention and the ability to interact more directly with teachers.

These programs can also provide additional hands-on experience through co-op training options. Many international students or professionals with previous degrees are interested in shorter certificates and diplomas offered by colleges in Canada. Especially in the context of continuing education and professional development, technical programs can be used to complement a degree from outside Canada as a stackable credential.

University:

They are academic institutions that are regulated by provincial legislation, but are autonomous in terms of academic matters such as the quality of programs, instructors, and policies and procedures. Unlike colleges, which award diplomas, universities in Canada are defined as degree-granting institutions offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Universities typically focus on analytical skills (the ability to understand and use information), and academic and professional programs. Due to the longer time it takes to complete a university program, typically three to four years, these programs are sometimes less attractive options for international students or professionals who are interested in a faster, more stackable credential.

Where should I go?

For those who want to get their first undergraduate degree, or who are interested in a professional program such as medicine and law, universities are a good option. Earning a university degree is also necessary for anyone who is interested in working in academia or research-based professions. However, if you have a degree in your country and want to supplement your education, then a college program may be a viable option for less time and cost.
