The technology industry in Alberta

The technology industry in Alberta has had an important development in recent years, which has made it a source of employment and migratory opportunities.

More and more we see that different types of markets are opened in the provinces, but there are definitely some that generate more impact and boom than others.

In this case, we have discovered that in the province of Alberta, the technology (IT) sector is growing in a way not seen before in this area of the country. The number of companies that are being born and arriving impact the economy of the province in a very positive way.

Currently, Alberta has approximately 3,083 technology companies, according to a study conducted by Alberta Enterprise Corporation (AEC). That compares to just 1238 companies in 2018.

Of the things that stand out most about all this “boom”, is that the province provides different aids or “subsidies” for the sustainability and growth of companies, and therefore encourages entrepreneurs to provide jobs and not give up on the continuity of their ventures.

One of the key points has been what we know as “teleworking.” For example: Software developers are in high demand and now what working from home is no longer an exclusive “technological benefit”, it is said that companies have to impress talent in new ways.

Now, academics are not far behind, as the high demand for vacancies in companies is leading some of Alberta’s post-secondary schools to revamp the curriculum to make sure young talent can enter the workforce.

For example, institutions such as SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) provide different programs of study that help students build their future oriented towards different aspects of technology. Some of its most outstanding programs are:

  1. Database Administrator
  2. Electrical Engineering Technology
  3. Instrumentation Engineering Technology

These programs are also taught for international students, therefore, if you are thinking of settling in the province of Alberta and focusing your life project towards technology, it will be a great investment for your future since the figures speak for themselves, and show us that in the long term the IT labor market will continue to grow.
